The Antikythera Mechanism
An Overview about Functionality and Usage

Using my replica of the Antikythera Mechanism, the displays and the functionality of the machine are explained, which includes the calendaric calculations and the prediction of Lunar and Solar eclipses.

Eclipse Predictions with the Antikythera Mechanism

One purpose of the ancient Greek Antikythera Mechanism was the prediction of lunar and solar eclipses. This video explains how this was done.

Calculation of the lunar orbit
in the Antikythera Mechanism

This video explains how the lunar orbit around the earth is calculated in the Antikythera mechanism.
  • Moon phases (new moon, half moon, full moon)
  • Moon position in the starry sky
  • Orbital velocity of the moon in the anomalistic month

Geocentric Planetarium in the Antikythera Mechanism - Evidence and Reconstructions

This video gives an introduction to the Ancient Greek cosmos and explains which evidence exists for a geocentric planetarium in the mechanism. The most recent reconstruction proposals are visualized with animations.

C64 Antikythera Simulator autoplay (Retrocomputing)

The video shows a simulation program of the Antikythera mechanism written in BASIC on a Commodore C64.

All outputs of the mechanism are modeled in this simulator. It can be used like a little time machine. You can add or subtract days, weeks, months, years, olympiads or full Saros cycles.

The source code of the simulator is available for download here: https://www.jepu.info/download/
